A Danish Folk High School is not to be mistaken for the American “high school” (which incorporates the last four years of public schooling), nor is it equivalent to any other form of state or private school in England or the USA. All Danish folk high schools are based on the teachings of N.F.S. Grundtvig and contemporary educators, who believed that valuable lessons about life could be learned through dialogue, teaching and social interaction. The Danish Folk High School, forwarding these concepts, is still seen as a vital part of the formation and development of democracy in Denmark.
N.F.S. Grundtvig was active in the 19th century in the movement for public enlightenment, along with contemporaries such as Soren Kierkegaard. Their ideas have endured and been enlarged by succeeding generations, and enlightenment is still what a Danish Folk High School is all about.
A course of study in what Grundtvig called the “school for life” will not give you professional credentials. It will, however, help you to grow as a person, and the integrity and self-confidence you gain will support you in your professional life.
There are no exams here. Although your stay here is bound to increase you skills – give you a more fluent command of English, for example – such progress will be neither measured nor graded. This leaves you all the more energy to concentrate on honing you practical, social and creative skills. Let yourself be carried away, and give yourself time to wonder about life and the world around you.
